What This Tool Does
This tool converts a value between units across seven categories, length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, and data storage. Pick a category, enter a value, and choose your from and to units, the result updates instantly, alongside a table showing every unit in that category at once.
How to Convert Between Units
Choose a category tab, type a value, then pick the From and To units from the dropdowns. The result card shows the converted value immediately, and the table on the right lists every unit in the category converted from the same input, click any row to make that unit the new target. The swap button flips the direction, keeping the current result as the new starting value.
Temperature: Why It Needs a Formula, Not a Multiplier
Every other category converts by multiplying or dividing by a fixed factor, but temperature scales have different zero points as well as different step sizes, so converting requires a formula rather than a single multiplier. Celsius to Fahrenheit is (C × 9/5) + 32, not a straight ratio, this tool applies the correct formula for every pair rather than treating temperature like a simple multiplicative unit.
Data Storage: Decimal vs. Binary Units
This tool treats kilobyte, megabyte, and gigabyte as binary multiples of 1024, following the IEC 80000-13 convention some operating systems use for file sizes, rather than the decimal 1000-based multiples used on hard drive packaging. Bit-based units, kilobit, megabit, and gigabit, are used for network speeds like a "100 Mbps" internet connection.
Common Uses for a Unit Converter
Converting a recipe between metric and US measurements, checking a weather temperature between Celsius and Fahrenheit, converting a file size between megabytes and gigabytes, and working out a speed or distance between metric and imperial units while traveling are all common uses for this tool. It works as a length converter, weight converter, temperature converter celsius fahrenheit, volume converter, area converter, and speed converter mph kph, plus a data storage unit converter, making it a general-purpose metric to imperial converter and online unit conversion calculator for almost anything you need to convert.
